Oct 25 , 2005 - Wilma Wipes out South Florida
The entire Southern section of Florida from Key West to Fort Pierce and Miami to Naples was pounded by hurricane Wilma. The storm knocked out power to over three million homes. Aside from the obvious inconvenience there are real dangers on Florida roads.
Traffic Lights Out
In Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, and Martin County over 97 percent of all homes are without power. FPL says it could take up to 4 weeks to get all power restored. With power outages so widespread most traffic lights are out. When traffic lights are not working you must treat them as a four way stop. This means you come to a complete stop and wait your turn. The car that got their first goes first.
Last year after Frances and Jean there were serious accidents when drivers did not stop at traffic lights that were out so be extra careful. And most of all be courteous, there's nothing worse than watching adults argue over who got their first.
Park Your Car
For the next weeks Florida roads and highways will be more dangerous than ever. If you don't have to drive it would be smart to just park your car and stay home. By driving you are endangering yourself and crews fixing power lines, phone lines and roads. Be aware that there is a curfew in effect from 7pm until 7am. If you are caught driving after curfew you can be arrested.
Our traffic school systems are all up and running so now may be a good time to complete your course.
