June 8, 2005 - 18 Year Olds Can Skip the Learners Permit
When you reach the ripe old age of 15 in Florida you are eligible to get your learners permit - also known as a restricted drivers license. You are then required to hold your learners permit for a year before you can get your operators license - your full drivers license. This rule applies to anyone under 18.
Already 18
If you are 18 years old or older you are not required to hold a Florida learners permit - you can get your operators license. We receive many questions about the age requirements from those already 18 and those who are about to turn 18. The most common question is from those close their 18th birthday.
Close to 18
If your 18th birthday is three months away and you have no drivers license - no learners permit you have two choices. You can get a learners permit and practice driving for three months and then get your operators license on your 18th birthday. The practice is always a good thing. Or you can wait until your 18th birthday and get your operators license. To get your drivers license in Florida you must complete the DATA course, pass the DMV written test, and pass the behind the wheel driving test at the DMV.
The DATA course teaches you how drugs and alcohol effect driving and is required for anyone getting their first drivers license in Florida - regardless of age. The DMV test is a 40 question test that covers road signs and road rules. The Behind the wheel test is administered at the DMV by a DMV examiner and tests you on the basics of driving.
