Oct 3 , 2005 - Driving Distracted could cost you $100
This may hurt electric razor sales and put a dent in the sales of big macs. This morning Connecticut began enforcing a new law that makes it illegal to do pretty much anything that distracts you from driving. The list of punishable activities includes eating, shaving, putting on makeup and talking on a cell phone.
State Police Cracking Down
The state police in Connecticut began enforcing the new law on Oct 3, 2005. If you commit a moving violation such as running a stop sign or red light and are distracted with one of the activities deemed distracting then you can be fined $100. In our opinion there are a few things missing from the list.
Reading while driving must be the most distracting thing you can do. Turning around and talking to your kids (or yelling at them) is very distracting - we know from experience. Instead of listing specific activities it would seem that better to just say you can be fined for not paying attention to driving.
Hands Free OK
The new law does not make it illegal to talk on a cell phone is you are using a hands free setup. So drivers in Connecticut are lining up to purchase headsets for the cell phones. Some say that they put their cell phones down a long time ago. That begs the question - why do we need to talk constantly.
Before we had cell phones were we longing for more communication? We think not. Some times the best way to figure out where you are is to take a look at where you came from. We would never presume to tell you that you should or should not talk while driving but you may find that a little time to yourself can be good in many ways.
