May 25, 2005 - Buckle Up Your Seat Belt Memorial Day
Florida has tough safety belt laws for a simple reason - seat belts save lives. Nationwide over half of the adults who are killed in auto crashes were not wearing seat belts. And for kids it's worse. Over 60 percent of the children killed in car accidents were not wearing safety belts. With Memorial Day weekend almost here the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) and local law enforcement throughout the state will be out in force and they will ticket you for not wearing a seat belt.
During the 2004 Memorial Day holiday weekend 40 people were killed in 35 Florida traffic accidents. Many of these accidents could have been avoided as 40 percent of them involved alcohol and 83 percent of the people killed were not wearing safety belts.
So it's time for Clickit or Ticket again. The goal is simple, get as many drivers as possible to put on their safety belts and their kids safety belts to save as many lives as possible. Florida State Troopers, sheriffs deputies, and city police will be out in force. Even the FHP administrative team will be out helping on patrols.
Be Aware and Report In
If you spot a drunk or aggressive driver the FHP reminds you to call *347 on your cellular phone. For emergencies dial 911.
